This is Sandra's
Story .. ..one of our students.
Sandra's father, Dave, came to us when she was 10 years old because he was worried about his daughter's reading and spelling.
When we talk with parents we like to find out as much as we possibly can about why their children are struggling.
Dave felt that reading and spelling were
Sandra’s only issues.
I asked him more questions and we drilled down into the possible reasons for her difficulties. He realised that there may be more going on. And it was hindering her ability to read, spell and learn.
He provided me with the following information:
- Sandra's listening is above average but sometimes she does lose
focus.
- Her speech is good, with good sentence structure, vocabulary and pronunciation. She doesn't ramble or go off point.
- Her reading is poor and below peer level. She has poor understanding or comprehension of what she reads. She often mis-reads, skips or guesses words.
- Fluency is also a problem. She tends to read slowly (too slowly) and doesn't enjoy it. She prefers illustrated novels or comics using the pictures to help her understand.
- She doesn't
like assembly in the school hall as she finds it too noisy.
- Socially she prefers to interact with friends on a one-to-one basis rather than in a group.
- Her sister is two years younger and is a better reader and learner. This is beginning to affect her confidence and self esteem.
Sandra started working on the Fast ForWord program in 5th Class /Grade.
One year later she completed two Fast ForWord Foundation components to build good Memory, Attention, Processing and Sequence skills. These are all crucial for good language, reading and learning skills.
She also completed three reading components to strengthen her reading, reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
She finished up working on a
fluency component to build fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation and reading comprehension.
When she started working on the program her reading was one year behind peer level. When she finished her reading was 5 months ahead of her peers.
This is what her father had to say when she finished working on the program…
"...
My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia and was struggling in school. After working on Fast ForWord her reading ability is a number of months beyond her actual school level after participating in the program. Joyce and her team provided a great service and support to enable her great improvement"
As I said a thorough and systematic way to reading success.
Kind
regards
Joyce
