Hello,
Do you think your child shows some form of dyslexia/reading challenges?
It can be difficult to spot because it’s a spectrum disorder and looks a little different on everyone.
To help you evaluate and understand your child’s
challenges, here is a checklist of dyslexia symptoms to look for by age.
Preschool
• Not recognizing rhyming patterns (like in nursery rhymes)
• Struggling with remembering or naming letters, numbers, and colours
• Not recognizing letters in their own name
• Learning to talk late
Kindergarten-1st grade
• Not understanding that words break apart into
sounds
• Not associating letters with sounds (that m sounds like mmm)
• Showing problems with speaking and pronunciation
• Having trouble sounding out words
• Misspelling easy words (like “dog”)
2nd-8th grade
• Reading slowly and awkwardly
• Disliking or avoiding reading out loud
• Confusing words that sound alike (i.e. “furnish” instead of “finish”)
9th-12th year/grade
•
Spelling words phonetically and inconsistently
• Omitting small words and parts of longer words when reading out loud
• Struggling to remember common abbreviations, including social media slang
• Answering comprehension questions better when text is read aloud
It’s interesting how the symptoms change as the student gets older. Children use coping strategies such as guessing, memorisation, asking their classmates questions and so on.
Your child may need specific work to hit the milestones that allow them to keep up with their peers.
The goal is to develop fluent readers, who comprehend well and learn efficiently.
Regards
John
PS: This week I'm putting together a small
group of parents who want to help their children get ready for the new school year by working on their reading skills using an innovative, motivating and effective 4 week course.
We plan to start the week of Monday 5th August.
The exercises can be done in as little as 30 minutes daily at home
Your child
will be better able to pay attention, stay focused and remember what they are reading and learning.
They will also develop the ability to follow what the teacher is teaching in the classroom.
Our typical results are 1 to 2 years reading gains in 40 to 60 hours work.
We are making it easy to get started for just
