There are 3 Parts To Reading.
1. Decoding
2. Comprehension
3. Fluency
FLUENCY
The link between decoding and comprehension
is Fluency!
Once we have worked on building the cognitive skills of Memory, Attention, Processing and Sequencing all of which are necessary to access the code
in order to decode the code we must now work on the Speed Of Decoding so it happens as automatically as
possible. This is fluency!
If your child is taking too long to decode a word it means that their focus is going into the decoding of the word and not into the absorbing of that word.
If, for example, they take as long as 5 or 6 seconds to sound out a word e.g. "CAT" then they cannot engage the Working Memory to absorb
the word and may NOT match it to a picture in their mind's eye.
Very often parents and teachers tell us that their child spent ages trying to make out a word and eventually did "get it" but when the word was presented to them again in the next sentence or paragraph it was as if they had never seen it before.
When we have worked on all of the above skills
we will then focus on building your child's reading fluency i.e. the number of words he can read per minute...correctly,
The outcome is fluent reading and a confident reader.
Please let us know if you would like to take this journey with us to improve your child's language, reading and learning.
I look forward to hearing from you.
We will look at fluency in the next email
All the best
John
PS This week I'm putting together a small group of parents who want to help their children get ready for the new year by working on their reading skills using Fast ForWord
We plan to start the week of Monday 4th November
The exercises can be done in as little as 30 minutes daily at home
Your child will be better able to pay attention, stay focused and remember what they are reading and learning.
They will also develop the ability to follow what the teacher is teaching in the classroom.
Our typical results are 1 to 2 years reading gains in 40 to 60 hours work.
Would you like to join us?
Just reply with the word "interested" and we will get you the information you need.
