Dear
I once worked with a student who was determined to read Harry Potter in her very first month of learning to read.
She jumped right in—whole chapters, long words, complicated sentences.
Within a few weeks she was frustrated, tired, and convinced she “just wasn’t a reader.”
So we hit pause and changed the plan.
Instead of trying to conquer a big book all at once, we broke reading into five core skills—just like the science-backed approaches from Neuron Learning and Carnegie Learning recommend:
✅ Letter–sound awareness
✅ Word decoding skills
✅ High-frequency sight words
✅ Reading fluency
✅ Comprehension of short, simple texts
But here’s the part most people miss:
Reading isn’t just a language skill—it’s a cognitive skill challenge too.
To read well, a child needs:
🧠 Attention that stays on the page
🧠 Working memory to hold sounds and words long enough to blend them
🧠 Processing speed to make reading smooth instead of exhausting
🧠 Auditory processing that helps the brain distinguish similar sounds
When these underlying cognitive skills get stronger, reading stops feeling like a struggle—and starts feeling doable.
So we focused on one skill at a time, both language and cognitive.
She revisited the same short passage every few months.
And each time, something almost magical happened:
The text felt easier.
The words came faster.
Her confidence grew.
That’s the power of a benchmark reading passage.
When you track progress on a set schedule—especially by recording your child reading—you can hear the difference.
It’s like comparing old height marks on the doorframe. Daily progress is invisible… until you zoom out.
This step-by-step method builds momentum, not frustration—small wins stacking into big breakthroughs.
And this is exactly why programmes like Fast ForWord and Clear Fluency are so effective.
They don’t just teach reading…
They strengthen the cognitive skills that make reading automatic, fluent, and enjoyable—so improvement is faster, deeper, and lasts.
